Now this is what we like to see: an affordable, decent resolution, widescreen LCD. Gold star ViewSonic.

The VA1912w is the name of the display which warms our hearts. It is a 19 incher with a nice 1440 x 900 native res, 16:10 aspect ratio and impressive 8ms response time which ViewSonic claims will ‘display even the most bustling action scenes or immersive gaming action without distortion’. Brightness and contrast ratios don’t let the side down either, with perfectly acceptable 300 cd/m2 and 500:1 ratings respectively.

Designed with multimedia in mind, the VA1912w is equipped with both analogue (D-Sub) and digital (DVI-D) connectivity, a 3.5mm audio line in and stereo speakers fitted on the underside of a slim bezel. All settings are adjusted via an on-screen menu, while a lock function for the OSD and power switch prevent unauthorised changes to the settings and stop the wife/gf/kids/dog turning it off. For photography aficionados sRGB colour space adjustment is supported which ensures colours depicted on screen match those on printouts of sRGB-capable printers.

Both PC and Mac compatible, the VA1912w goes on sale from 1 December and the best bit is it retails for just £249 including VAT. Drop your partner/parent a hint by purchasing a 19in rectangular stocking and hanging it from the fireplace.
