Faster Than A Speeding Bullet: BenQ's 4ms TFT

Response time is the new 0-60mph of the TFT world and the battle is on to see who can make the fastest. So far the crown resides with the Viewsonic VX724 which we previewed in March and reviewed in July, but now BenQ has just gone and parked its own model on the front row of the grid.

The FP91V is the name of this racer and it ties with VX724 by producing a cracking 4ms response time. As I’m sure you’re all aware response times essentially determine how long it takes for a liquid crystal cell to transition between colours. The faster the time, the less “ghosting” of images and motion blur during games and movies. Suffice to say, with 4ms (and even 8ms) you’re unlikely to get any problems at all.

Away from this headline grabbing feature, the rest of the FP91V fills out rather nicely as well. It’s 19 inches, with a reasonable – if not overly high – native resolution of 1280 x 1024, there’s a nice contrast ratio of 550:1 and pixel pitch of just 0.294mm.

Physically, you’re granny could (probably) carry it at only 8.5Kg (just watch out for her dodgy hip on the stairs) and, once the old dear lugs it into the house for you, you’ll be pleased to discover there are both VGA and DVI inputs (meaning she won’t have to carry it all the way back to the shops *whip, crack*). Power consumption is an efficient 60W and if you are the kind of guy who likes to listen to their music through monitor speakers (please say you’re not) then your undemanding, tone deaf ears will be more than content with the typically low 2W output.

We don’t yet have a release date for this thoroughbred racer, but considering BenQ’s usual strategy it shouldn’t be more than a couple of months away. The expected US price (for what it’s worth) is a strangely precise $438 and I’ll eat something unpleasant if it turns out to be much more than £280 over here.
