The FP72V is the latest monitor from BenQ to get the “striking” and “stunning” description it always attributes to its style-orientated products, but are their deficiencies behind its good looks?

In short, the answer is yes, but less deal with the branding first. After all, you’ve probably noticed the FP72V falls fowl of the soulless coding I so detest with attractive products. So, once again, I find myself forced lay down the law like I did here and here. What to choose? Well, since the FP72V is physically appealing but with some shortcomings in substance, I’ve decided to go with Britney.

Britney is a nice looking display with a silver and black bezel, detachable side speakers and minimalist controls along the bottom. Also impressive is the Senseye (that's really how you spell it), a digital image enhancement technology that BenQ uses to automatically adjust the picture quality, the super high 1000:1 contrast ratio and the ultra-wide viewing angle (178 degrees).

Not so good for a 17in model is the 1280 x 1024 maximum resolution (I’d expect at least 1600 x 1200) and the dreary response time of 25 milliseconds, which means there is likely to be some blurring in fast moving computer games and movies. The latter of these two specifications really confuses me because, clearly, Britney is designed for front room status and will often be used in a leisure capacity (get your mind out of the gutter!).

Still, Britney is not short of connections with D-Sub, DVI-D and three USB2.0 ports, but she’ll cost you a pretty penny at £299.99 including VAT. She’s on sale now. Are you a sucker for a pretty face?
