Sony Launches High Contrast Home Cinema Projector

Earlier this week, Sony launched a home entertainment projector with an astonishing claimed contrast ratio of 6000:1. The VPL-HS50 delivers this through a combination of technologies called Micro Lens Array and Wide View Film, which produce the deeper black colours. Additionally, Sony has developed an ‘Advanced Iris Control’ function, which dynamically changes according to the input signal. Meanwhile Sony claims that image uniformity at the centre and corners has been improved between eight and twenty per cent compared to the VPL-HS20.

The projector uses LCD technology, with each of the three panels sporting a resolution of 1,280 x 720. Brightness is 1,200 ANSI Lumens. Connectivity includes a cutting edge HDMI connection, which should ensure the clearest picture possible.

Sony projectors are pretty flexible in how they are set up and the VPL-HS50 is no different. It can be placed off centre to the projector screen that to lens shift, which adjusts the horizontal and vertical positioning.

The 1.6x zoom lens offers a range of throwing distances with a 2.5 metre screen size achievable between 2.9 and 4.6 metres from the screen. Fan noise is 24db.

Apart from its technology the VPL-HS50 also has great looks going for it with smart two-tone silver and black colouring and smooth rounded edges, which should look preyty cool whether on a table or ceiling mounted.

Sony has confirmed that the VPL-HS50 will be available in mid October but didn’t provide pricing. However AV Land has it for a tentative price of £1,899.
