I'm planning a tutorial on wildlife photography next, make sure your friend reads it!

Looking forward to it. Wildlife is exactly that; wild - you often have to shoot from far away, and alive - they don't necessarily wait for you to get into the best position and/or tweak your camera settings.

Again very nice and refreshing article - bravo. I also like how you provide inputs/insights on mistakes photographs might make through lack of experience. One of my colleagues came back from a vacation in Kenya, where he only took his Canon body and a EF-S 17-85mm!
Dust is present in all his pictures, as he didn't took into account that 1) a savannah is a very dusty place 2) DSLR + lenses needs cleaning, electronic sensor cleaning is not enough regardless of what marketing claim. Furthermore all the wild animals in his pictures are one centimeters tall/wide at best; it's kind of hard to take nice photos of giraffes from several hundred meters with a 85mm :-)
Not a ruined vacation per say, but imagine if something like this happened at your wedding...
