Summer's here at last (at least for those of us north of the equator) which means holidays filled with sun, sea and sand. While sunshine is always good for taking photos, for most cameras sea and sand are best avoided. If you drop your average pocket compact on the beach, or worse still in the sea, you'll be writing to your insurance company as soon as you get home. However there are a few cameras that are built to survive not just a trip to the beach, but can also cope with swimming, diving and general rough treatment, and still manage to take good photos.

For several years the market for waterproof compact cameras has been the exclusive territory of just two manufacturers. Pentax has its long-running and highly successful Optio W series, the latest example of which is the Optio W60, launched last summer. Meanwhile Olympus has been making its rugged mju series for several years, including the waterproof and shockproof mju 850 SW, which I reviewed last September.

Both the Pentax Optio W and Olympus mju SW series have proved to be very popular with holidaymakers, surfers, sailing enthusiasts and others who like mucking about in the water, so it's not too surprising that some of the other big compact camera manufacturers have decided to muscle in on this corner of the market. As a result, today I'm taking a look at new waterproof cameras from Canon, Fujifilm and Panasonic, as well as the latest from Olympus. As usual in the highly competitive digital camera market, each of them offer unique features and qualities, but which of them will you be buying to take your holiday snaps? Let's find out…
