A pity you couldn't take your car collection underwater (North sea too cold then?) and no a swimming pool doesn't count. I borrowed an Olympus mju earlier in the year and took it for a snorkel in the Caribbean. Through a face mask with the sun shining through the water it was impossible to see anything on the screen and taking a picture became a failed exercise in pointing and hoping. I'd be interested if having a brighter screen helped and would suggest that Trusted Review ship Cliff of to Costa Rica immediately to find out.

I use a Sony Cybershot DSC-T10 with the marine pack which is capable of a depth of 40m and I've used it to 31m with no problems. it's not much more expensive than the pricier cameras here. biggest problem once you get below 10m is colour balance as the water gradually filters out red light so you need the flash or an external light source but if the water is not clear you will just get fog with the flash. if you can snorkel properly you will need the 10m depth of 2 of the cameras, it's easy to go below 5m.

Can't say I ever really tried the underwater picture capabilities of my 720mju other than out of curiosity.
My usage of it amounts to taking pictures and movies of bands while being bounced-about-in-a-torrential-downpour/flung-around-in-a-dustbowl-moshpit at the front of a festival stage; by which point I'm just happy to still have a working camera at the end of the day. Maybe you should try testing these guys out in such a fashion and report back at the end of this years festival season?
By this method a camera could be graded on its ability to produce perfectly focused shake-free images that aren't half obscured by the back of someone's hand =)

@mockleshuckle: That's precisely the reason I've been wanting to get one of these cameras for the last few years. Haven't actually got round to it yet but it's nice to know I'm not the only one. That said, I am getting a bit old to go in for the mosh pits nowadays. I tend to stand just behind the madness and appreciate the band.

Tell me about it, I'm in constant fear of suffering the indignity of being knocked out by a 14 year old upstart. Standing at 5'9" however, it means I need to be in the action if I want to see anything. However if they were to release periscope attachments for these cameras I would be more than happy to chill out and retire to the back.

The Pentax Optio W80 has only just been announced, and will be reviewed separately in a few weeks.
