Refine search for Digital Cameras

Over on the right side of the main window are the photographic and input panes. The histogram is always an important tool, displaying the exposure and tonality of an image in a digital format.

Below this a Quick Develop tool that allows you to make fast changes to White Balance and tone controls such as Exposure, Clarity and Vibrance. We'll talk about this in more depth in the Develop section, as I prefer to use the more refined and accurate tools available there rather than in the library. If you do decide to make some quick corrections to an image you can then select multiple images and sync them so that those corrections are added to all the images. This is my favourite tool in Lightroom, especially when working with large batches of files that need creative adjustments.


The final two sections on the right are the Keywords and Metadata headings, where you can add keywords to individual images or multiple selections as well as view the camera settings and so forth in the metadata. You can also add your copyright and contact details to the images, which are then embedded in the files. Again all this information can be synced with other images.


A couple of final tools are worth mentioning. The spray can symbol, between the main pane and the filmstrip lets you quickly tag multiple images with keywords, flags, ratings and so on. Meanwhile the Rename Photos tool in Library>Rename Photos lets you change the name of the photos from the unwieldy DSC98763 for example to something simpler, either based on metadata, custom names and more, available from a drop down menu.

So, that's the basic rundown of the Library module, and I hope you're better equipped to start organising your images into a coherent system and before we move onto the Develop module in two weeks time.
