Fujifilm Finepix F100fd Review

The Fujifilm F100FD is a serious disappointment, lots of potential but the wrong feature set. Dynamic Range is a good add but it doesn’t compensate for the lack of A and S shooting capability and the lack luster low light performance. Returned after 5 days. Fujifilm still doesn’t get it; the F30 and F31 are still the best digitals they made. And, the F100 is over priced based on performance capabilities and image results.

It's not as good as the legendary F31, but it's the best in it's class. Show me a compact that has 28mm-140mm, can match the 1/1.6 inch sensor for quality, can use SDHC cards, has no color fringing. And I'll probably buy that too.

I own this camera, it is the compact camera that best fit my requirements and budget, although PASM modes would have been really nice to have. I agree that the ISO comparison shots could have been done better (why not reshoot 100ISO if you have a shakey hand??). GulfFish - lack lustre low light performance - compared to a SLR maybe, but in its class it is still one of the best. DPreview Summer shoot out places this camera in the top of the class with special mention of its high ISO/low light ability.

I would like to point out a small error. The S5 Pro and the F100fd share the SuperCCD BUT there are a few different SuperCCD technologies, SuperCCD HR (High resolution - as found in the F100fd, F50, F40, F30 etc) and the SuperCCD SR (Super dynamic Range - as in the S5 Pro and the S3 Pro). These technologies are designed to combat differing problems, HR for noise due to high pixel count, SR for extended dynamic range. There is a new SuperCCD EXR (not in any cameras yet) that is designed to combine HR and SR technology to give a high resolution (low noise), extended dynamic range sensor, it will be interesting to see how these sensors will be implemented.
