As usual, the best camera for concert photography is a digital SLR, preferably with a good quality fast zoom lens on it. High-end bridge cameras are also very good for this sort of photography, in fact better in some ways because they are usually lighter and more portable. An articulated LCD monitor with live view is a very useful feature for concert photography, because it enables you to frame shots while holding the camera above your head, shooting over the heads of the audience.
A good compact camera can also take decent gig photos, but for the best results you really need one with manual exposure, manual white balance and manual ISO setting. Failing even that, then a night portrait flash setting can also produce some interesting effects.
