Next up is the Giottos entrant. This slick and stylish tripod got my attention as soon as I opened the box. Hand made from aluminium and finished in a unique black and silver fleck hammered style, the 9242 has a lot going for it. Offering pretty much all the standard features: a fully reversible main column with an inventive non-removable locking ring for ease of use, three individually adjustable leg angle options, a quick release camera platform, not to mention a simply gorgeous ball and socket construction head for pan and tilt control. This uses carefully chosen materials rather than lubricants for exceptionally smooth movement.

The leg locks are an excellent feature. Giottos have come up with a rather original approach to this using spiral threads. It's possible to unlock all three with just half a turn or so, and at the same time. The fact that they are also dust proof makes cleaning and maintenance quick and easy.

Incorporating two level indicators, the 330DX is unique in both the placement and the design of them. One is situated on the shoulder of the leg joints, and the other is neatly concealed under the quick release camera platform. Like the Slik, this has foam padding on the upper leg sections for added comfort in cold weather.

The Giottos range offer a number of different heads: stills work, video and even telescope mounts. It comes complete with a carrying case and a small tool kit for adjustment when you are out and about. If you want style and practicality you could do a lot worse than this item.
