Last but certainly not the least, is the Lowepro Apex 140 AW. This simple, practical design is the smallest and lightest in today’s roundup, weighing in at a mere 0.4kg. Equally at ease in an urban setting or out in the wilds the 140 is a sensible choice for protection.

As I would expect from Lowepro, the construction is first rate. It uses durable lightweight materials that will stand the test of time. And even if they don’t, Lowepro offer a limited lifetime warranty just in case.

Internally, the Apex 140 is much as you would expect for a pouch of this size. The two dividers can be adjusted for almost any SLR camera and standard zoom lens configuration, still leaving just about enough room for a flash and an additional lens. Limited in internal space, it still manages to include several protected compartments for bits and pieces including two tiny pockets in the lid for cards or batteries.

The features it does have are very practical, a concealed pull out cover for protection against rain or dust, external rubber ‘bumpers’ to help against knocks and wear, and not forgetting the multiple carrying options: a shoulder strap, a carrying handle and a belt loop. To be honest, there isn’t really a huge amount you could add to this bag to improve it.

Verdict
If you have limited gear, or just need a more compact carrying system for the great outdoors, then the Apex 140 is definitely worth a good look.
