Canon yesterday announced the launch of its latest digital SLR, the EOS 7D. The new camera is a high performance, semi-pro spec APS-C camera that fits into the EOS model range above the EOS 50D but below the EOS 5D Mk II. It is aimed at serious amateur and semi-professional photographers.

The new model features a newly designed high-speed 18-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor and dual DIGIC 4 processors, giving it a maximum continuous shooting speed of 8fps and an ISO range of 100-6400, expandable up to 12,800 ISO.

Like the 5D Mk II the new EOS 7D can record video in 1920 x 1080 resolution with a range of different exposure settings and frame rates. Video is recorded in H.264 format, with linear PCM audio. On-camera sound is recorded in mono, but a stereo microphone can be connected.

Like the other high-end EOS model the 7D has a tough magnesium alloy body with environmental sealing equal to that of the EOS 1DN, in other words splash proof and dust proof.

The 7D has a new high performance viewfinder with 100 percent frame coverage with 1.0x magnification and a transparent LCD overlay that allows features such as AF points, spot metering target or a composition grid to be superimposed on the TTL viewfinder. The monitor screen is also improved, with a new internal structure designed to reduce glare in bright sunlight. The EOS 7D is also the first EOS to introduce a Dual-Axis Electronic Level, visible in both the viewfinder and on the LCD, that indicates both pitch and roll angles.

The EOS 7D features a 19-point cross-type AF sensor. Different AF points can be set for vertical or horizontal orientation, so photographers can automatically switch between landscape and portrait shots. It also features Canon's new Focus Colour Luminance metering system which measures focus, colour and luminance across 63 zones.

The EOS 7D will be available from early October 2009, and will be priced at £1699.99 (inc. VAT) body only.
