Following Tuesday's news about the launch of the new R8 camera, Ricoh has announced a second new model which also abandons the Caplio brand name. The R50 is a more modestly specified and lower priced alternative to the wide-zoom R8. It too features a 10-megapixel 1/2.3-inch CCD sensor, but has a 5x zoom lens equivalent to 36-180mm, a 2.5-inch 230k LCD monitor, and no image stabilisation.

It is a fairly light and compact camera, measuring 97.3 ×56.3 ×23.4mm and weighing 116g without the battery. Its features are definitely in the point-and-shoot category, but it does have 15 scene modes, 10cm macro, 3200 ISO maximum sensitivity and a 640x480, 30fps video mode.
The R50 goes on sale in March with a list price of £149.99.
