Nikon has also announced three new digital SLR lenses. The first is the AF-S DX NIKKOR 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR, a high-performance standard zoom that will be available as an optional kit lens on Nikon DX sensor digital SLRs, including the new D60. It features a silent-wave (SW) motor, 17 elements in 11 groups (with two ED glass elements, three aspherical lenses), a 7-blade aperture diaphragm with curved blades, f/3.5-5.6 maximum and f/22-36 minimum aperture and 0.38m closest focusing. It measures approximately 72 x 85 mm and weighs 485g. It will be available from February priced at £429.99, although it will be cheaper if bought as a kit lens.

The second new lens is a 60mm prime, the AF-S Micro NIKKOR 60mm f/2.8G ED. This new Micro lens allows photographers to shoot 1:1 life-size close-ups without the need for any other accessories. It features a built-in Silent Wave Motor, and in a world first for an interchangeable Micro lens for SLRs, two a-spherical lenses are employed to correct spherical aberration and coma. The Nano Crystal Coat dramatically reduces ghosting and flare caused by internal reflections. An additional ED glass element minimizes chromatic aberration to deliver higher resolution, high-contrast images. The closest focusing distance is 18.5cm, with a maximum aperture of f/2.8 and a minimum aperture of f/32. It weighs 425g and measures approximately 73 x 89 mm. It goes on sale in March priced at £379.99.

The third new lens announced this week is even more specialised, the PC-E NIKKOR 24mm f/3.5D ED, PC (Perspective Control) lens. This new lens is equipped with a tilt/shift mechanism that gives photographers the flexibility to manipulate image perspective, distortion and focus. It is designed to be used with full-frame cameras such as the D3 only, and is intended for specialist fields such as architectural photography, where the ability to control perspective is important. It features a ability of shift: ±11.5 mm, a tilt of ±8.5 degrees, and ±90-degree lens revolving capability for versatile tilt/shift effects. It measures 82.5 x 108 mm and weighs 730g. It will be available from March priced at £1099.99, and Nikon has stated that other D3-compatible shift lenses will become available at a later date.
