Samsung Launches New DSLR And Compacts

The week before the big annual Photo Marketing Association (PMA) camera show in Las Vegas is always a busy time in the photographic industry, with most of the major manufacturers announcing big product launches. First off the mark this year is Samsung, with a new digital SLR camera and no fewer than eight new compacts.

The biggest news is the launch of the GX-20 digital SLR. Co-developed with Pentax, the GX-20 is Samsung's version of the newly announced Pentax K20D. It features a 14.6-megapixel CMOS sensor developed by Samsung, as well as a Samsung 2.7-inch TFT 230k pixel LCD monitor with that new must-have for digital SLRs, live view.

The camera's features are nearly identical to the K20D, with a robust environmentally sealed water-resistant body, a self-cleaning anti-dust mechanism and moving-sensor image stabilisation. Photographic features include one-touch RAW mode, ISO settings of 100 - 6,400 and built-in High Dynamic Range (HDR) imaging. The only major differences between the Samsung and Pentax versions of the camera are a different menu system and the fact that like last year's GX-10 the GX-20 used Adobe Digital Negaitve RAW format.

The GX-20 and lenses are expected to be available from March 2008, price for the GX-20 with 18-55mm lens - £699 RRP.
