Last week in my review of the Sony W200, I predicted that within six months all the major manufacturers would have launched 12.1 megapixel models. I may have to amend that estimate to six weeks, because Canon's Autumn range includes no less than three 12.1MP cameras. The first is this Digital IXUS 960 IS, which is an update of the IXUS 900 Ti. Like the earlier model it features a titanium body, but this time the designers have taken full advantage of that metal's lightness and strength, and the 960 IS is surprisingly light for such a well-equipped camera.

Features include the aforementioned 12.1 megapixel 1/1.7in CCD sensor, a 3.7x zoom with optical Image Stabilizer, ISO 1600 and Auto ISO Shift, DIGIC III image processor with Face Detection AF/AE/FE and Red-Eye Correction in playback mode, a 2.5in high resolution PureColor LCD with wide viewing angle, plus an optical viewfinder. It also has several movie options including high resolution XGA, Long Play and Time Lapse modes. It won't come cheap though: the digital IXUS 960 IS will be available from September 2007 priced at a hefty £369.
