The ultra-compact Z-series gets two new models, with a new flagship in the shape of the 8 megapixel FinePix Z100fd.

Remarkably thin at only 19.8mm thick the FinePix Z100fd has plenty of advanced features including a 5x folded-optics zoom lens, Fujifilm’s Face Detection system, intelligent red-eye removal and the new CCD-shift image stabilisation. Like the other cameras in the Z series, the Z100fd is stylish to a tee. It has a strong metal body, the front cover slides diagonally and has an illuminated ‘Z’ logo, and the camera will be available in a range of four two-tone colour schemes.

Other features include 58MB of internal memory, dual xD-Picture Card and SD/SDHC compatibility, 2.7-in 230Kp LCD monitor, focal length range equivalent to 35-177mm, and ISO 100-1600 sensitivity at full resolution.

In what is hopefully not an embarrassingly patronising attempt to appeal the “teen and young adult” market, Fuji’s next new model is the Z10fd, which is available in a wide range of wonderfully exciting colours, with names like Hot Pink, Wave Blue, Flame Red, Midnight Black, Wasabi Green, Moss Green and Sunset Orange. Moss? Perhaps they mean Kate.

At least the specification isn’t mucking about. The Z10fd offers a 7.2-megapixel CCD, 3x optical zoom lens (38-110mm equivalent), 2.5-in 230Kp LCD monitor, ISO 100-1600 sensitivity at full resolution and 54MB internal memory with xD-Picture card, SD and SDHC compatibility. For the “yoof” market it has a easy-to-use scene modes and a special Blog mode, because apparently that’s what all the cool kids are doing these days.

There is one curious point though. In stark contrast to the prevailing trend, the video mode offers only QVGA (320 x 240) resolution at 30fps, which is lower than some mobile phones.

Like the other new releases announced today, both the Z100fd and Z10fd will be available from September, with pricing to be announced closer to the launch date.
