Samsung Rolls Out Its First HD Camcorder

Now this makes a refreshing change: Samsung, famous for its 'World's First...' proclamations, has today become one of the last major camcorder manufacturers to come up with an HD model. Still, looks like it has done a nice job...

The 'SC-HMX10' is capable of shooting in 720p and records content using the space saving H.264 codec onto either its 8GB of onboard storage or flash memory via its SD/SDHC expansion slot.

The image viewer is quite large at 2.7 inches and there's a single 1/6" CMOS chip with a gross pixel count of 1.5MP. Optical zoom is an excellent 10x while digital zoom is a great sounding 100x, but we all know digital zooms are completely pointless (better to shoot and crop). Battery life is fairly standard at 90 minutes (when recording using the highest quality levels) and there are five shooting modes in total. Connectivity is your usual mix with HDMI, component and USB ports and a mic input.

A standard definition version of this model, called the SC-DX10 – a hybrid DVD-flash memory camcorder - with 4GB of memory – will also launch around the same time. As the features suggest, the SC-HMX10 will be pretty affordable and its $799 should attract many when it launches in September. The stand def SC-DX10 will go for $549 when it arrives in October.

Don't worry Sammy, I'm sure you'll have another 'World's First...' before long.
