It’s become frustrating searching for all the side news while Riyad and Will in LA bring you cool cutting edge products like SanDisk’s new View PMP, Toshiba’s New Regzas and LG’s dual format Blu-ray/HD DVD player. By contrast, away from CES I’ve discovered a pudgy Pentax.

The blobby little fellow – known as the Optio E30 – does break some new ground however in that it is the first truly budget digicam I’ve seen to sport seven whole megapixels. It also provides a feature set that would’ve been high end just 12 months ago.

Highlights include SD and SDHC memory card support, a 2.4in LCD which is proportionately huge compared to the asking price, a 3x optical zoom, automated setup and 11MB of built-in memory. There is also compatibility with the ImageLink printing system for direct printing without a PC.

So what is this fabled asking price? Just $149.95 and since it will waddle into UK shops next month there isn’t long to wait. See you can be fat and popular…

…just not attractive.
