D-SLRs are probably one of the last bastions of the technology market where price cuts have yet to slice and dice the entry level down to super cheap levels. Had.

With the official announcement of the D40 Nikon has gone to a new pricing low with a $599 (£317) RRP that puts it within touching distance of premium digital cameras. So what’s the compromise?

Looking under the hood the answer is not much. The D40 sports 6.1 megapixels, a 2.5in LCD, takes both RAW and Jpeg, shoots 2.5 frames per second, swallows SD cards and comes with a 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor lens.

Battery life is strong too with 470 images per battery charge while Nikon has upgraded the image processing engine so the camera ready to shoot in a near instantaneous 0.18 seconds. A new integrated help menu system and three area autofocus round things off nicely.

December is scheduled to be the D40’s month of arrival and with dimensions of just 126 x 94 x 64mm and a weight of 522g (with battery) it looks like this is one D-SLR which won’t be making much of a dint in your pocket or your wallet.
