When you go out with your friends (that is a presumption since I’m am writing and you are reading a technology website) the most important thing you want to do, other than get drunk, is take daft pictures of one another as you get drunk.

In recognition of this time honoured tradition Fujifilm has come up with an ideal digicam to handle such an important task: the FinePix Z5fd. This ultra compact (92.8 x 55 x 19.4mm) six megapixeler is the first Z series model to incorporate the company’s ‘Face Detection Technology’, something previously reserved for its high end S6500fd.

FDT (I’m a lazy typist), to quote my previous explanation (I’m just plain lazy, “claims to zero in on whichever poor unfortunate you intend to snap and optimise settings such as focus and exposure levels before recording their embarrassed mugs for all eternity. It takes just 0.04 seconds supposedly to make this calculation and can track up to 10 faces in a single shot.”

Furthermore the Z5fd also features a super high 1600 ISO which should help take clear pictures in low light conditions.

Elsewhere stats are fairly standard with a 2.5in ‘reinforced’ LCD (told you it targets drunk people), 14 shooting modes, VGA video at an excruciatingly familiar 30fps, an SD memory card slot, 26MB of internal memory and a range of rather silly colours, of which the daftest two (the other is predictably silver) I’ve chosen to show here.

Unfortunately I don’t have the foggiest when the Z5fd will start detecting the spotty faces of teenage electronics shop staff or how much you’ll have to shell out to save the camera’s delicate viewfinder once it does. I suspect it could cost as much as 80 to 90 pints in an average English pub or three to six in an average London nightclub.
