I get a lot of emails from you guys n ‘gal’ (we are a tech website) about megapixels. So for the record: yes, they do help image quality but above about six megapixels other camera qualities become more important. So thank heavens Pentax has taken this into account with its new slimline seven megapixeler.

The S7 keeps up the fine tradition of the skinny Optios by measuring just 85.5 x 53.5 x 19.5mm and weighing a Nicole Richieian 120g with the battery and memory card but there is much more to it than that.

The S7 – as the name suggests - is the company’s first seven megapixel digicam to be housed in such a tiny frame. It ticks all the prerequisite boxes: 3x optical zoom, fully retracting lens, 2.5in LCD and VGA video recording in the space saving DivX Mpeg4 format. Furthermore Pentax gets considerable brownie points for adding in a blur reduction mode which reduces camera shake and something it calls ‘Face Recognition’ technology which is designed to simplify portrait taking by automatically detecting the position of the subject's face and adjusting the focus and exposure to optimum levels.

An additional nice touch is the camera’s auto-tracking AF feature which continuously focuses on moving subjects, be they kids, pets or Spode running from the local farmer.

Pentax tells us other titbits on the S7 will not be announced until closer to the August release date but considering that is a whopping six days away we should have an update for you pretty darn soon. I’ll also try and get more news on whether Spode escaped the aforementioned local farmer unsullied. He did have a nasty butt injury a few weeks back though I’m reasonably sure it’s unrelated…
