Cliff loved it, Samsung stole it and now Pentax has upgraded it. We can only be talking about the superb *ist DS.

The - even more surreally named - *ist DL2 is its heir elect with 6.1 megapixels, eight pre-set scene modes including an ‘Auto Picture Mode’ which automatically selects the most appropriate setting from Standard, Portrait, Landscape, Macro and Action given the subject and situation. Darn handy as long as it gets it right…

Other highlights include a 2.5in LCD capable with 210,000 pixels, a 23.5mm by 15.7mm CCD image sensor, user selectable sensitivity limit between 400 and 3200 and a stainless steel chassis. The burst rate isn’t the most fantastic ever seen being just five frames at 2.8fps and a Jpeg RAW mode is conspicuous by its absence on the company press release (we’re waiting for Pentax to get back to us).

Pricing for this linguistic frustration also remains an unknown at this point but it doesn’t take a genius to work out that it if we found its predecessor selling on the web for £522 at launch that the *ist DL2 isn’t going to be a million miles from that. Listen out for Cliff's high pitched screams of excitement signalling which will alert you of its availability on the street.
