39 Megapixels Do You?

Called the KAF-31600 (below) and KAF-39000, these latest images sensors from Kodak really do support 31 and 39 megapixel photography respectively and they nearly double the resolutions previously available to professional photographers. At the core of these chips is a brand spanking new 6.8 micron CCD pixel which the company claims can produce these mind numbing snaps without any compromise on current colour fidelity, dynamic range or sensitivity benchmarks.

Despite the incredible size of these photos the two sensors behind them remain remarkably small. The 31600 has just a 33 x 44mm imaging area and the 39000 is only fractionally larger at 36 x 48mm. Naturally, it is going to be a while before you see these puppies in anything that doesn’t require a second mortgage to buy (and it is doubtful whether the general public would ever really need holiday memories so detailed that you could make out the hair sprouting from Auntie Margaret’s back mole through her bathing suit), but the level of innovation here is pretty staggering.

That said, technology is often forced on the public before it has shown any desire to receive it, so who’s to say we won’t be taking 39 megapixel cameraphone birthday bash shots of our drunken mates in 2008? Personally speaking, I hope no event of which I have no memory will ever be recorded quite that clearly…
