Sony Cybershot N1: Touch Screen Goodness

I like this (Lars doesn’t, but tough because News is MY domain!). Introducing the Sony Cybershot DSC-N1 “Paint”, the company’s first digicam to sport a touch screen interface.

My self-deceiving confidence tells me most of you are thinking “How cool”, while a smaller minority (mostly Swedish types) are grumbling into their rökt renkött. You see, being touch screen, means the N1 needs few buttons so the display can be stretched to a meaty three inches. A funky stylus lets you edit and scribble on prints inside the camera and it should appeal to technophobes, since they tend to bang screens when confused anyhow…

Fans of unnecessarily high megapixel ratings should also be well pleased with the eight on offer here, while the rest of us will just downscale them since we don’t want our holiday snaps filling our entire hard drives. The usual 3x optical zoom and VGA 30fps video standards are here and Sony promises you’ll get a credible 270 shots off a single charge.

Only downer is that the newly re-crowned King of Proprietary has again left its empathy at home and snubbed SD cards, since the N1 will only swallow Memory Sticks. Availability for this, otherwise highly interesting, device will be mid November; though early indications suggest it won’t come cheap at around $500.

So what was Lars’ case against it? Hmmmn, I really don’t remember ;)
