I said yesterday that ultra compact digital cameras are one of the sexiest areas of technology right now. Well, they’re about to get even more compact and even sexier after Samsung completed the development of its five megapixel CMOS image sensor.



Dubbed the S5K2E1FX, the sensor is said to deliver the same performance as a traditional CCD, while also reducing power consumption rates and production costs. Built using 0.13 micron technology, it has a 1/2.5in lens aperture with a pixel measurement of 2.2 x 2.2 microns and increases the fill factor (the image sensor’s measurement of light sensitivity) by over 50 per cent.

Now the fun part: the S5K2E1FX has a footprint at least 30 per cent smaller than other models of the same resolution. This means we could conceivably see the first 1cm thick digital camera. There’s meat on the skinny bones of the S5K2E1FX though, since it still manages to shoot VGA quality video at 30fps.

Samsung VP Yong-Hee Lee described the technology as “a new milestone in digital imagining excellence” and while he would, there is definitely credence behind his gushing company pride. Implementation of the new sensor in products will begin immediately, with the first devices expected on the market by Q4, just in time for Christmas…
