Five megapixel digital cameras are so Q1. To at the head of things these days you need eight and Olympus is here to please with its parenthesis branded “µ [mju:] Digital 800”.

Technical details aside for a minute, it’s actually starting to annoy me that Olympus persists with this pretentious branding. Choose “µ” or choose [mju:] or better yet choose something that doesn’t sound so fashionably false. Ideally, just stop using µ - it’s a nightmare trying to type it every month on a Western keyboard.

Rant over, the Digital 800 (as it shall be referred to from now on) is all good. The step up to eight megapixels is a welcome development, as is the 3x Optical zoom and weatherproof metal body (available in either blue or silver).

Further sweetening the deal is a large 6.4cm LCD with ultra-wide 160 degree horizontal and vertical viewing angles, 19 photo modes and the blur protection Olympus has installed to try and guard against the hazards of camera shake.

On the video side is the now almost customary VGA resolution footage, while a nifty little trick is the 19MB of internal memory which means you can save a few images even without a memory card. On top of standard features such as PictBridge compatibility and Macro shooting is also a Super Macro mode that lets shots to be taken from as close as 3cm (I shudder to think what needs to be photographed from there?).

Price is competitive too, given the spec on show, at Ł350 including VAT and it can go home with you from July.

If only they’d lose the µ [mju:] I could like it…
