AMD Second Quarter Results Show Further Losses

AMD has continued its trend of losing less year-on-year in 2009, with its second quarter results showing what could be considered an improvement over the same quarter last financial year and the previous quarter this financial year. In hard figures, the quarters revenue was $1.18 billion (£718 million) resulting in a net loss of $330 million (£201 million).

For those counting, that's a significantly better result than last year, when AMD recorded a massive $1.195 billion loss and a noteworthy improvement on last quarter's $416 million loss.

Incidentally, Intel posted a $398 net loss in the last quarter so on at first glance AMD did notably better. However, Intel absorbed the entire $1.45 billion fine imposed on it by the EU in Q2, so the comparison is hardly fair - rather like the verdict in that investigation if you ask me (ahem).

CEO Dirk Meyer conceded that it hadn't been as good a quarter as hoped, saying: "While we increased cash, exceeded our revenue plan and reduced operating expenses in the second quarter, gross margin was disappointing." Nonetheless, Meyer is confident in AMD's ability to improve its results further as "New platform, microprocessor and graphics introductions planned for the second half of 2009 position us well to improve margins and meet our financial goals for the year."

With a number of new product ranges expected in the secod half of 2009 - including rumours of AMD's first DirectX 11 GPUs - I'm inclined to remain optimistic.

In related news AMD has also added a pair of CPUs to its X2 range, the Athon II X2 245 and Athlon II X2 240. Running at 2.8GHz and 2.9GHz respectively the 240 and 245 have 2MB of cache, operate with TDPs of 65W and, of course, feature dual-channel combined DDR2/DDR3 memory controllers. UK prices are a mystery as yet, but expect these to be cheap.
