Not a month has passed since Intel released Centrino 2, and already there's speculation about its successor. Calpella, as Montevina's successor has been codenamed, is, according to DigiTimes, set for a launch in the third quarter of next year; some twelve months after its predecessor - hardly an unreasonable expectation.

Calpella is set to be as much of a revelation for notebooks as Nehalem will be for desktops when it launches later this year. Just like their desktop counterparts, Calpella systems will forego the traditional (for Intel) CPU and chipset conned over the FSB setup, instead bringing the memory controller onto the same die as the processing cores. In addition, just like AMD Fusion, there will be offerings from Intel that pack a graphics chip onto the die as well, providing a full system on a chip solution - apart from the RAM, that is. These CPUs are being codenamed Clarksfield sans the IGP and Auburndale with it.

With the memory controller moved into the CPU die, a simpler chipset, dubbed Ipex Peak-M, will be left to manage everything else; PCI Express ports, dedicated graphics chips and so forth.

In the words of Queen: "I want it all. I want it now".
