We all knew something was going to happen in the wake of AMD's CEO stepping down. If DailyTech is correct, then the company's latest roadmaps detail just what: 8- and 12-core processors on a new socket offering DDR3 support. Say hello to socket G34.

According to AMD insiders, the octo-core CPU, codenamed Sau Paulo, is a "twin native quad-core Shanghai" design. That is to say, two Phenom processors in a single die package. AMD's twelve-core chip has now apparently been named Magny-Cours, both as a nod to the French Grand Prix destination, and a not-too-subtle pun (many-cores, in case you're French pronunciation isn't up to scratch).

Not much hard information is available other than a leaked diagram detailing the socket, which packs an impressive 1,974 pins - some 767 more than the current design. That's hardly surprising as each of the new CPUs will apparently boast 12MB of L3 cache and four HyperTransport 3 interconnects and enough lanes for quad-channel DDR3.

It's an interesting co-incidence that that just as Intel moves to adopt an integrated memory controller design, AMD may be about to adopt Intel's two-CPUs-one-die strategy. Developers should apparently get their hands on preview hardware in early 2009, so we'll probably be waiting until nearer then before AMD dishes out any more information.
