nVidia To Abandon VIA For Intel Atom

We've seen VIA's Nano CPU (previously Isaiah) in action, happily churning out some acceptable Crysis framerates, and had hoped to see similarly interesting things from the company's collaborations with nVidia in the MIS sector. Apparently, though, nVidia is planning to abandon its ties with VIA in hopes of getting its GPU tech into Intel's Atom platform.


According to DigiTimes, "sources at PC makers" have said that nVidia effectively used its partnership with VIA as leverage to persuade Intel to let nVidia offer its MCP73 IGP chipset for use in Atom-based systems. Supposedly nVidia would cut its ties with VIA were Intel to agree to a partnership.

That could put VIA in the rather unfortunate position of having to find a new chipset provider for systems wanting to use its processors. While VIA does make its own chipsets, as we saw with the HP 2133 Mini-Note, graphics performance isn't what you'd call good.

Obviously this is only a rumour thus far, but it has some hallmarks of plausibility.

i would have liked to see a turbo-charged eee pc or some rival - imagine, playing crysis (with some acceptable frame rate drops) on a 9 inch screen?
