Intel's Atom may think it's the hot new power saving processor in town but faces don't stay fresh for long in IT world and VIA's 'Isaiah' CPUs have been launched today to some serious bluster.

Now dubbed the 'Nano' the 65nm based chips come in U (ultra-portable) and L (desktop and laptop) classes with ultra low power ratings ranging from just 5W up to 25W. Idle power use can drop to a meagre 0.01W. What makes this more interesting however are the bold performance claims emanating from VIA, namely that the line is capable of playing back Blu-ray HD content and even running Crysis!

Now we'll take this latter statement with a shovel full of salt since Crysis frame rates depend upon much more than selling your soul to Alienware a quick CPU, but we're getting the message. Furthermore, at just 21 x 21mm the 'nanoBGA2' package is small enough to fit into ultra compact systems potentially presenting a genuine alternative to the much-lauded Atom.

The full range of Nanos reads:

  • VIA Nano L2100 processor 1.8GHz 800MHz 25W
  • VIA Nano L2200 processor 1.6GHz 800MHz 17W
  • VIA Nano U2400 processor 1.3+GHz 800MHz 8W
  • VIA Nano U2500 processor 1.2GHz 800MHz 6.8W
  • VIA Nano U2300 processor 1.0GHz 800MHz 5W

All go on sale immediately and to say we're keen to see how these ambitious little fellows benchmark akin to saying: roaring British summer, we'd quite like one...
