You may think that memory isn't exactly the most exciting thing in the world, especially not on graphics cards, but I'd like to contradict that assumption based on a couple of things. First, without advances in graphics memory technology and speeds we'd still be playing Tetris and Space Invaders and no mater how good those games are, they'd have gotten old after 20-something years. Second, I get to throw around fun figures such as 6Gbps memory bandwidth, on GDDR5 memory modules, quite a speed bump if you consider that GDDR4, which is only just coming into use, tops out in the region of 2.8Gbps

Unsurprisingly it's Samsung making the announcement and suggesting that come mid next year full scale production of modules will be in effect. At first it will be offing 512Mb chips which will offer a total of 24GBps of bandwidth - truly mind numbing figures.

Obviously with nVidia still resolutely plodding on with GDDR3 and AMD only using GDDR4 on its high-end cards, it may be a while before we see GDDR5 actually being used on a mainstream graphics card, but nevertheless a bit of innovation never hurt anyone and hopefully we'll see the benefits sooner rather than later.
