Quad FX is one of those technologies that you expect never to get off the ground, so hearing that AMD has pulled support isn't really that much of a surprise to me. Ok, so pulled is a bit of an overstatement, existing owners will still get AMD's backing, but for the immediate future no successor is going to be worked on. If you want a dual CPU solution, without using a server motherboard, you'll have to wait for Intel's Skulltrail next year.

Of course back in January when Quad FX launched, AMD didn't have a quad core solution and this was the closest it could get to rivalling Intel chips like the QX6700; not without a sense of irony given AMD's continuous harping on about ‘native quad core' solutions. Speaking to The Tech Report, AMD's Suzy Pritt explained the situation: ‘The short answer is that while there are still engineering resources focused on future platform offerings that build off Quad FX, the current energy and effort has gone into programs and product initiatives like "Spider" and AMD has discontinued future planning and development of its eight-core enthusiast platform at this time'

Now that AMD does have its quad core processor out the door, the need for Quad FX has rather expired. Quad core systems are hardly being taxed by current software and Phenom isn't exactly impressing some of us so focusing resources on to areas like Spider is definitely a better use of AMD's time and money. However, given Intel is still selling the CPUs we'd recommend people buy, it does seem a litle strange that the company isn't still pushing the enthusiast sector more.
