For what should promise to be the Swansong update of AMD's Athlon and Sempron ranges, very little song and dance has been made about the latest additions to its processor line-up. Of course you are all supposed to be yearning for Phenom chips, but if you are building a low power system, say an HTPC, then these new chips may offer some attraction.

Expected to be available in November, we have a first a new X2 part, the BE-2400, clocking in at 2.3GHz and costing $104 in 1,000-unit batches. On the single core front the LE-1620 and LE-1600 will run at 2.46GHz and 2.4GHz and cost $53 and $47 respectively.

On the Sempron side we'll be seeing the $53, 2.2GHz LE-1250, $48, 2.1GHz LE-1200 and $37, 1.9GHz LE-1100. Along with the new SKUs, we'll also see a slight readjustment of the current pricing structure, mainly clearing a bit more room at the top of the pile for the soon-to-be-launched Phenom processors.

While we already know that Intel currently dominates the high-end, AMD does still put up a reasonable battle in the budget sector - Sempron is still far and away a better choice for low price/power systems than Intel's Celeron. The new chips and price structure should help reinforce that.
