AMD’s executives must be beside themselves with glee today as Intel has found itself subject to a raid by the European Commission as part of an ongoing anti-trust case. Although other computer manufacturers have also found themselves in similar positions, they aren’t (yet) the subject of the investigation themselves. The EC hopes to uncover whether or not Intel has been engaging in “anti-competitive” behaviour against AMD. Of course the basis for this case are complaints not from consumers, but AMD itself, so should be taken with a pinch of salt.

The case alleges that Intel has been providing substantial rebates to OEMs if they use only Intel processors, paid to have the AMD fitted products delayed and sold server CPUs at a loss to ensure the uptake of its own products. Whether any of these allegations are true and what the EC will do about it if they are proved so, remains to be seen, but the EC is obliged to investigate these claims whether they appear valid or not.

Intel itself, unsurprisingly maintains that it has done nothing wrong and that its conduct is lawful, pro-competitive and beneficial to consumers. Looking at the recent figures for both companies' Q2 finances, it’s no surprise that AMD want something to put a spanner in the works over at Intel. In addition to the EC inquiries, AMD has also filed a lawsuit with the same allegations in Delaware. Personally I don't expect anything to come of this, but only time will tell.
