For those of you wondering exactly what processor options would be available in the upcoming Asus upgradable notebook, the answer has been uncovered by Italian site, Notebook Italia. It appears that builders will have the option to add the latest processor in Intel’s mobile range, the Intel Mobile Core 2 Extreme X7800, which was announced today.

When running normally the X7800 clocks in at 2.6GHz, just above the T7700’s 2.4GHz.What makes this chip extreme is the ability to increase that clock to either 2.8GHz or 3Ghz by upping the processors multiplier. The TDP of the X7800 is up from the 34W of the standard Core 2 Mobile parts to 44W. Notebook Italia indicates that the energy consumption rockets by 50 per cent when overclocking to 3GHz, so battery life will no doubt take an appreciable hit - although I doubt that battery life will be the most important factor for anyone intersted in this mobile chip.

Pricing is set at $851 (around £415) in batches of one thousand. We can only hope that this will translate to a reasonable UK price when the chip appears in gaming notebooks. Until a notebook manufacturer announces a machine based on the X7800, I guess we'll just have to hope for the best.
