Over the last six months it has become patently clear that Intel has regained the performance crown from long time holder AMD and now thin and light laptops can get in on the act too.

The first Ultra Low Voltage (ULV) Core 2 Duo CPUs have begun to ship in two parts: the L7200 and the L7400. The pair are clocked at 1.33GHz and 1.5GHz respectively and both employ a 667MHz FSB as well as being loaded with the full 4MB of shared Level 2 cache.

The most impressive fact about the new chips however is their power usage with each consuming just 17W, roughly half that of their desktop equivalents. Another two ULV CPUs, the L7500 and L7200, should arrive in Q2 along and will be upgraded models of the L7400 and L7200 because of their support for an improved 800MHz FSB – the latest improvement (along with Draft N) to be made to the Centrino chipset.

Official pricing for the L7200 and L7400 has yet to be released but expect to see a raft of newly empowered skinny and uber-waify notebooks based upon them. Sign me up!
