AMD Quad Core Q1 2007?

We don’t hear quite so much as we used to from the CPU sector. Previously there was a song and dance made every time we got a higher processor clock rate but with the emphasis (rightly) shifting away from this it seems to take a whole new technology is now required to raise pulse rates. Thankfully AMD looks set to make us all hot and sweaty.

Six weeks after Intel demoed its first quad core chip AMD has predictably hit back with its own four way response. The K8L series is reported to be the quad core evolution of its K8 architecture and will see the light of day in time for Windows Vista’s big launch (fingers crossed) in Q1 next year. Intel’s own consumer quad core offering, codenamed ‘Kentsfield’ (Why? Because sexy places like Rotherham, Scunthorpe and Accrington need to be reserved for eight, 16 and 32 way CPUs respectively), is predictably meant to be hitting stores around the same time.

Now I’ll admit the arrival of a new Microsoft OS tends to fill me with more dread than excitement (Oh my god, THAT won’t load and THAT and why is my sound card smoking?) but the hardware camps do look to be making the time around launch date pretty exciting. I can just see it now: press releases from Alienware and Voodoo detailing their quad core, DX10 video carded, Vista installed machines in an array of bright colours and modded cases. It almost makes me want to say “Go Microsoft!”… almost.
