Corsair Bucks Up AMD Mobos

If there is one area where AMD is lacking in comparison to Intel (and God Knows there aren’t many) it’s RAM. Whilst Intel mobos have DDR2 modules screaming to over 1GHz, AMD chipsets typically get limited to DDR400… if we’re lucky. Consequently, Corsair has decided AMD advocates need a little performance boost.



The result is its XMS-3500LLPRO modules: a pair of matched 1GB DIMMs running at DDR437 (2-3-2-6-1T tested latency). Developed in association with Asus, the new RAM claims to be the highest performing memory on the AMD platform and boasts that it significantly closes the gap on Intel for performance increases from 1GB to 2GB.



As you can see from the table above, Corsair purports that gains in Battlefield 2 at higher resolutions become incredibly close, while AMD systems look to actually outdo their Intel rivals in Premier Elements DVD encoding. Of course all these tests are somewhat flimsy given that RAM is far from the be-all and end-all of system performance these days, but it does show significant strides are being made.

Looking at the bling factor, 3500LLPRO DIMMs also come with 18 flashy LEDs (perfect for clear cases), while each has its own aluminium heatsink thermally bonded to the module. All DIMMs come with lifetime warranties and are available immediately. Like any cutting edge product, prices aren’t for the faint-hearted with 2GB setting you back in excess of £250, but in the land of the speed freak the gamer with one more frame per second is king ;)
