It’s hard to believe that it’s already been six months since the last Intel Developer Forum, but here I am again sitting in the Press room at the Moscone Center, halfway through day one.

Despite the fact that the Intel Developer Forum officially kicked off today, there were a few briefings for the Press yesterday. These generally outline some of the key topics that will be discussed over the next few days, and give the journalists an idea of what to expect and what to look out for.

It came as no surprise that the first topic to be covered was multi-core technology. This was the big topic at IDF Spring, and the momentum has grown since then with dual-core products already in the market place.

The first question that was asked was “Who needs multi-core?” With the obvious answer being, everyone. I have to say that I agree with this sentiment wholeheartedly – multi-core technology is something that every user needs, but some of them just don’t know it yet.

The slide below hints at the new focus that is driving Intel’s research and development – user needs. No longer should the user have to tailor his/her needs to the solutions that are available, the solutions should be tailored to the needs of the user.

What the slide shows is that multi-core technology is equally as important for the consumer as it is for the business user, but for very different reasons. Whereas multi-tasking and multi-threaded applications and games will drive dual and multi-core adoption in the home, when it comes to business there’s a whole host of different benefits, not least of which is virtualisation.
