64bit Celerons Complete The Range

“I’ve started so I’ll finish” is the message from Intel this week, as it announces the immediate availability of 64bit enabled Celerons.



Now it may have taken the company until February to hop on the 64bit train that AMD has been riding for nearly two years now, but since then Intel certainly built up a head of steam. Every single product line from the chip giant is now available with 64bit support and upgrading means the Celeron range means even the budget orientated can run Windows XP 64 (um, whoopee?).

Of course, you’ll need a compatible chipset such as the 915 or 910 Express to get your double bit Microsoft groove on, but it’s worth the effort since these value chipsets also support technology like high definition audio.

OK, here comes the science. The new Celerons are built using the 90nm process and fit the LGA775 package. They feature 256KB Level 2cache, have a 533MHz system bus, a processor speed of 3.2GHz and of course that all important EM64T support that makes the 64bit magic happen.

A second Celeron D processor was also revealed, based around the mPGA478 format, but its doesn’t support the double bit-rate so we’re going to show it as much love as a red headed step child.

Prices for the new Celerons range from $73 to $127 in 1,000 unit quantities. I’m sure web e-tailers will transport those costs from Crazytalk City into Realitiville pretty sharpish.
