AMD To Recommend Overclocking Tools

Overclocking is something many of us have tried. Cooking the processor, voiding the warranty, it doesn’t seem to matter for that small performance percentage increase. Everyone likes getting something for free and now AMD wants to help you do it safely.

The company says it is soon going to make recommendations for which heat dissipation systems will most safely overclock your Athlon FX processors. This makes sense, given that the FX range has shipped with unlocked cores for some time now. As of yet, it is unclear exactly what form this “recommendation” will take, but it is logical to expect some kind of official product list on the company’s website and “AMD Approved” logos and the like on third party packaging.

Now, I’m sure I’m going to get emails asking how this is going to effect warranties, so this is the rub as I understand it. Just because a company says it is better to overclock your processor with this rather than this, doesn’t mean it will put a loving arm around you if you return it to them in burnt toast black. Unfair? Personally, I don’t think so. After all, Ferrari virtually screams at you to break the speed limit, but it isn’t going to pay the fines when you do (wouldn’t it be cool if they did?!). In essence: “We suggest the tools; it is up to you what you do with them.”

Whether this experimentation with overclocking products means AMD will also start to unlock its mainstream processors is open to debate (for the record, we tend to think not), but it serves as a good taunt to the Pentiums. You can just imagine the subtext: “Our processors are so fast we let the consumer add the finishing touches!”
