In early April the RAM business had what I can only describe as a crazy 24 hours. Manufacturers released a slew of new modules all aiming to top one another. Corsair eventually won out by announcing the immediate availability of memory running at 800MHz, well now the same company has hit 1GHz.

The new XMS2-8000UL modules, available in both single and dual kit packages, run at aggressive latency settings of 5-4-4-9 and were developed in collaboration with Asus for its latest Intel i955X chipset (the P5WD2 Premium).

When used in this setup, Corsair claims it saw a 17 per cent memory performance improvement over DDR2 667MHz in SiSoft Sandra’s memory test. Naturally enough, this isn’t going to make a massive difference to overall system performance, but for the hardcore amongst you every little bit helps.

In typical Corsair style, the XMS2-8000UL modules can be bought now. It lists Dabs, Ebuyer, Komplett, MicroDirect, Overclockers.co.uk, PC World and Scan as its primary UK retailers, but we couldn’t see any prices up just yet. Expect supplies to roll in at any minute.

Of course, what we now really want to see are the chipset manufacturers upping their game to properly take advantage of these incredible RAM clock rates. After all, the memory makers have played their part…
