X2s Hit The Streets

Just a quick one on this since we have already written extensively about dual core Athlons and reviewed one here, but they are out today.



Two versions are available: “Manchester” with 1MB of L2 cache and “Toledo” with 2MB of L2 cache divided up between the two cores. Both processors run at speeds of 2.2GHz and 2.4GHz, this gives Manchester overall clock ratings of 4200+ and 4600+ respectively and Toledo of 4400+ and 4800+ respectively.

AMD boasts that dual core processors can boost some digital media and productivity software performance by as much as 80 per cent, but that on average users will see gains of between 22 and 34 per cent. As more software gets coded for dual core operations we’ll see bigger increases.

The X2s are 90nm chips that consume 110W and use the socket 939 interface. As per usual, prices are quoted in batches of 1000 (helpful, eh?) with the chips costing $537, $581, $803 and $1001 with each clock increase. I think we can all see where the sweet spot is there then…

Meanwhile, Intel is blowing the horn of EM64T (the company’s 64bit extensions) today for its Celeron range, but we knew that already didn’t we…

PS - Evesham was the first to contact us about their new X2 based systems, the Axis 2s. Obviously these are top end machines and will be available in configurations with 4200+, 4400+, 4600+ and 4800+ X2 processors. They're on Evesham's site now, and will be available in mid June. Congratulations on having the fastest follow up release in history guys!
