So you’ve bought a brand new Intel desktop 64 bit processor on its day of release to go with your gleaming Sonoma based laptop, well, I can wipe that smile off your face in one go. Not only do we have dual core Intel chips being prepped for the second half of this year, it now transpires that Samsung has produced the first working prototype of DDR3 DRAM and aims to have it in consumer machines by next year.

Yes, that brought you down to earth with a bump. Still, progress is well… progress and it seems we all have to sacrifice our wallets at some stage to keep up with the great strides of the IT industry. So, with a plastered on fake smile, here we go again.

DDR3 DRAM will operate at speeds of 1066 Mbit/sec, double that of current DDR2 memory, and consume just 1.5 volts. DDR2 uses 1.8 volts and older DDR hogs 2.5 volts. Yes, it is faster and more environmentally friendly… I'm beginning to hate it already.

Fabricated using an incredibly advanced 80 nanometre (nm) process (even the just-announced Intel 64 bit chips are made at 90nm) it will also make use of new functionality to permit its break neck speeds, namely self driver calibration and data synchronisation.

Samsung predicts DDR3 will represent 65 per cent of the entire DRAM market by 2009, so enjoy DDR2 until then, if you still can?
