When I set the theme of The Open Road, I’m not sure exactly what I was expecting, so it’s been interesting to see the various interpretations that people have come up with. One of the most literal, but also one of the most striking, is this superb shot from first-time entrant Bisca Iulian of Alba, Romania. Bisca explains: “The photo was taken back in 2005, in Romania. The place it's called "Transfagarasan". It's a road made in 4 years (1972-1976) and it's situated at 2200m altitude. The length of the road it's 92 km. In the photo I have a small part of the road, but it's very interesting if we think that the maximum driving speed it's around 40km/h. Another interesting thing about this road, it's that almost 150 people died working on it.” Bisca used a Canon PowerShot S410 to take the picture, and wins himself an Adobe software bundle of Photoshop Elements 7 and Premier Elements 7, as well as a 2GB SanDisk Extreme III SD card and a 5-in-1 card reader.

Our second prize winner this month is the best of the “vanishing-point” shots that I mentioned earlier, taken by another first-timer, Mark Stokes of Ermington, about 35 miles from me here in Devon. “This image of a Track "an open road if you use a 4x4" was taken in the Devon countryside where the yellow of the oil rapeseed contrasts with the red of the local soil. The storm clouds had just passed over and gave the fields a great depth.” Mark used a Canon EOS 20D with a 10mm wide-angle lens and an exposure of 1/400th at f/14. He wins himself an Adobe software bundle of Photoshop Elements 7 and Premier Elements 7, as well as a 2GB SanDisk Extreme III CompactFlash card and a 5-in-1 card reader.

Our top prize winner this month is yet another competition newbie. Robert King of Bracknell, Berkshire (coincidentally when TR is based) has taken a shot that Jeremy Clarkson would be proud of. Robert used a Canon EOS 40D with a Tokina 11-16mm lens and a neutral density filter, attached to the bonnet of his Honda S2000 sports car by a Manfrotto suction mount and triggered using a wireless remote control. It’s quite a set-up, but the result is a stunning picture that wins Robert a copy of Adobe Lightroom 2, a SanDisk Extreme III CompactFlash card and a 5-in-1 card reader.
