Finally we come to our three prize-winning shots for this month. Once again the final decision was not an easy one. There were so many good entries that in the end the selection of the winners required a vote among everyone in the office.
My personal favourite is this brilliant frozen-action shot from Csaba Meszaros of Leamington Spa, UK. “The shot was done with a Sony A700 camera and an external flashgun (an old Metz 40MZ-3). The flash was connected to a self-built sound-activated flash trigger. The short duration of the flash light very effectively lights up the splinters.” As first runner-up Csaba wins the superb new Samsung NV9 advanced compact camera. He also wins a two-gigabyte SanDisk Extreme III CompactFlash card for his A700, as well as an ImageMate 5-in-1 card reader.

A popular choice for our second runner-up is this great close-up shot from Hugh Thomson of Balmullo, Fife, Scotland. Hugh used a Sigma SD14 fitted with a Sigma 105Ex macro lens, and used a Sigma EF-500 flash to light the shot. The Sigma’s unique Foveon X3 sensor has done a great job of capturing the colour, texture and detail. Hugh also wins himself a Samsung NV9 compact camera, as well as a two-gigabyte SanDisk Extreme III CompactFlash card for his SD14, and an ImageMate 5-in-1 card reader.

Our first prize winning shot this month comes from Simon Jackson of Bolton, Lancs. UK. Like Eyal Darshan on page one, Simon has used a hand-held flash pointing into the camera to produce this striking effect. He must have been quick though, because the exposure was only half a second. Simon’s composition and timing have earned him this month’s top prize, a superb Samsung GX-20 digital SLR complete with 18-55mm lens. He also wins a SanDisk Extreme III SD card to go in it, and an ImageMate 5-in-1 card reader.

Many thanks to all our entrants, and congratulations to Csaba, Hugh and Simon. Don’t forget that the current round of our photography competition is open, with the theme of “Lines and Circles” and a closing date of October 31st. What a fantastic group of entries.
(..I'm almost glad I didn't have time to enter this month!)
Well done to all :)
