Another example of flash freezing movement, although on a somewhat smaller scale, is this colourful close-up from Neil Davies of St.Helens, Merseyside, UK. “I used flash to capture this speedy little bee. I have no idea what species the bee is, but it looks like a Leaf Cutter, as I saw a similar bee buzzing around with a pair of garden shears.” Ah, that famous Merseyside humour…

One of the most eye-catching and creative entries this month came from Kecskes Rita of Budapest, Hungary. “The picture shows the whirl made by a small mixer (it is rotated upside down). The flashgun was used to freeze the movement. The colours in the whirl are reflections from a colour magazine placed under the glass. The camera used is Konica-Minolta 5D with a 100mm macro lens.” It sounds simple, but it takes a lot of skill and patience to get it to look this good.

The careful positioning of his light sources has resulted in a superb macro shot of one of the new British 2 pence coins, shot by Steve Ayres of Shipley, West Yorkshire, UK, who also had a featured photo in last month’s competition. Steve included a shot showing how he used simple household items in a skilful and creative way to set up this excellent photo.
